Play Ball!
This photo was taken on the backside of Nationals Park July of 2019 while watching the Nationals play the Dodgers in Washington D.C.
“Play Ball” the famous words that every plate umpire yells out to start the game, any umpire worth their weight will also say this to signify the ball is no longer dead and is now live again but more on that later. I thought that would be a great title for the first ever blog post for the new Blue’s Review Blog where you will get read an umpire’s perspective on all things baseball/softball related, from little league, high school, and even the MLB.
You may be wondering who exactly I am and what my qualifications are to write this blog. I am a 21 year old college student at WSU Vancouver who has always had a love and passion for baseball. I grew up playing baseball at a little league level and I always admired and looked up to the umpires who officiated our games. As soon as I was of age, aka 13, I started umpiring myself. my mentor, DM was a 15 year veteran umpire at the time and he taught me everything I know about umpiring today. Fast forward to today where I have been umpiring for 8 year, currently umpire High School Softball, and all levels of Little League Baseball and Softball.
When looking into other umpire influencers or blogs I came up short, which only made me even more excited to get to start my own here at Blue’s Review. If you search the word “umpire” into instagram the top results are for umpire hate blogs and pages that are designed to get videos where umpires may have made mistakes and exploit them a few likes and followers. I will be the first to admit that umpires are not perfect, but we sure do try our best to make the right call. From time to time I will share umpire videos on the blog, my intention will never be to bash fellow umps but instead I will use the videos as a training tool to help us all get better. I also feel that it is important to share videos of when we got the right call, and used the right mechanics, so you will see me share videos like that as well. I have attached a link to the instagram page bellow so you all can see exactly what I’m talking about.

The only other influencer I could find in the umpire community is Gerry Davis, who is a MLB umpire with many years of experience under his belt. Gerry also has a podcast called 12 for 12: an umpire podcast. I have personally listened to it and find it very engaging. I hope to bring that same level of engagement to this blog as well. I am even hoping to add podcast to the blogs to mix it up so you don’t always have to read what I have to say.
